Seashore, Flax
Emma Knight is a publicist for a book publisher. She and her husband, Richard, lived in London for years but were never entirely reconciled to city life. So in 2016 they moved to a run-down bungalow in Haslemere, Surrey, with big plans to turn it into a functional, contemporary family home perfectly tailored for their growing family. They engaged the architect Tom Jestico and set to work.
They chose neutral bedroom curtains for their newly built Surrey home. Read on to find out more…

A versatile textured fabric that combines flax and sustainable wool to create a wild and strong lived-in yarn peppered with colourful flecks. The flax is grown in mild, northern climes, where steamy summers make it soft and silky.
Learn moreWhy did you decide to build your own modern house?
A lot of us live in old housing stock which is inefficient and designed for an out-dated model of family life. We wanted to prove that it was possible to build something that was really well thought out, perfectly adapted to our needs (and no more), consistently comfortable all year round - and very efficient - on a limited budget. We just about achieved that!
What is your favourite part of your new home?
Ours is an upside-down house. We’re on the side of a hill so it made sense to make the lower, darker spaces bedrooms, and the light-filled upstairs rooms the main living spaces. It was a good decision. The views from our open-plan kitchen-dining-living space are wonderful. We never tire of the changing light and the big skies. It is a very calm space - and our favourite part of the house.
